Custom Gifts [A guide for buying handmade gifts]

Hello friends,

Do you like giving gifts to friends and loved ones? Do you want to give them meaningful, personalized gifts that aren’t bought at a big box store? That’s how I felt. I loved making gifts for those I loved knowing that no one else in the world had the exact same thing. However, I found it hard to always find a personal, handmade gift which is why I started making my own gifts. When I was younger I would try to sew small things, but after one too many fights with the machine I gave up. Then I discovered crocheting and I was hooked (haha, gotta love puns) on making gifts for my family and friends. Yet sometimes it is still hard to come up with ideas to crochet, specifically for the men in my life. So I decided to come up with a guide to help others (and myself) find handmade gifts to give to loved ones.

Handmade gift ideas:

  1. Something they can wear

  2. Something they can use every day

  3. Something they will cherish

Now let’s dive a little deeper into these topics.

  1. Something they can wear

This one makes sense and is fairly simple, but we still seem to forget about it. We all have to get dressed every day so it makes sense to give them something they can wear. Whether that be socks, a nice shirt, or a pair of handmade mittens we all find these things useful. I naturally get cold easily and living in Colorado doesn’t help. So I always love when I am gifted thick socks or fuzzy pants and it is even more special when it is handmade!

Here are some examples of handmade gifts to wear:

    Handmade hat or baby hat

    Handmade headband/ear muffs

    Handmade sweater

    Handmade gloves/mittens

Little Baby Hat

2. Something they can use every day

This is yet another forgotten category of gifts. Simple things that they can use every day make good gifts too. Things such as washcloths are used every day and can remind the receiver of you whenever they use them. I was gifted an adorable set of salt and pepper shakers by my friend and now every time I use them I think of her.

Here are some examples of handmade gifts they can use every day

Washcloths

Sponges

Coasters

Scrunchy

3. Something they will cherish

We all have that one friend that is obsessed with Star Wars or cats, but usually, everyone has something that they love. For my sister, it is dogs, while my brother likes Jeeps, and my friend loves sting rays. If you ever learn that a friend likes something make a note on your phone so when it comes to getting them a present you know a theme to look for. This can be as easy as finding a crochet cat that looks like theirs or more complex like the time I made a crochet sloth plant holder for a friend who loves plants and sloths.

Here are some ideas:
